Rhetorical situation essay
The purpose of this essay was to find a commercial or a print ad and analyze the rhetorical methods used in the ad. Some of the rhetoric used in the ads includes ethos, pathos, logos, kairos and commonplaces. We learned to recognize how the media industry used the heroic techniques to persuade us to buy a certain product. I analyzed a Nike ad for the fuelband and discussed the pathos in the commercial and the kairos and ideologies it responded to. The ad is included on this page, under the link to the essay.

Motivational Speech
This unit required us to write a motivational speech. The goal of the speech was to motivate our audience to do a specific thing, such as join a club, donate money or buy from a specific store. We had to use proper rhetorical techniques and understand who our was (our peers) in order to convince them to do what we were asking of them. I decided to write my speech on body image and how the issue of odd image is portrayed in the media. I used visuals, showing different magazine covers and a video showing how the industry photoshops models. I was simply asking my class to recognize that these models have computer generated features and to love their own body
Policy paper
This paper was within the same unit as the motivational speech posted above. The goal of this paper was to wrote about a policy that you wished to see changed, reinforced or put in place. I chose to write about a policy that I would like to see reinforced more and also a policy I would like to see put in place. Both of these policies had to do with how body image is portrayed in the media. The first policy discuses how Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act should be reinforced. The second policy was one I wished to see reinforced. It would be modeled after Israel's recent law and require health standards to be implemented in the beauty industry. Hopefully, the result would be a more positive and realistic body image shown in the media, which would lead to less body dissatisfaction in the population.
